Carpe Diem centers on Vassar Spore, an overachieving 16-year-old girl who has her
life planned perfectly for the next 10 years.
Vassar’s plans are interrupted, however, when her parents are
blackmailed by her eccentric, globe-traveling Grandma Gerd into allowing their
only daughter to travel through Southeast Asia for the summer. Through the crowded streets, questionable
food choices, and treks up impossible mountains, Vassar attempts to learn the
secret that forced her into this predicament.
After
reading Carpe Diem, it has quickly become one of my favorite
books. The cast of characters inhabiting
the novel is not only humorous, but also--for the most part--believable, while
the Southeast Asian setting provides the perfect backdrop for adventure. Excellent writing paired with just enough
information about the languages and places Vassar visits make Carpe Diem an exceptional read well
worth your time.
